International Students

Managers supervising international students in student employment roles should be aware that these employees may have specific work authorization requirements. By offering flexibility during peak academic periods and fostering an inclusive and supportive work environment, managers can help international students gain valuable professional experience while ensuring compliance with institutional and employment regulations.

The following provides key information on work authorization requirements for international students.

  • A Social Security Number alone does not verify work authorization for international students.
  • International Students who do not have a social security number must work with the Global Engagement Office to complete the required steps outlined in Step 5.
  • Obtaining a Social Security Office appointment can take a few weeks.
  • Santa Clara University must confirm valid work authorization before the start date to avoid liability.
  • An international student can only begin working once they have received an application receipt from the Social Security Office appointment.
  • Students will not be able to enter time worked until they have entered their Social Security Number and have completed all onboarding hiring steps in Workday.
